How to Verify if a User Has Permission to Install Packages in Salesforce

To install or download apps from the Salesforce AppExchange, users must have the Download AppExchange Packages permission. This guide explains how to verify whether a user has this permission and how to troubleshoot if it is missing.

1. Go to the User’s Detail Page

  1. Navigate to Salesforce Setup.
  2. In the Quick Find box, type and select Users.
  3. Click the Full Name of the user you want to check.

2. Check the User’s Profile

Under the user’s detail page, click in the profile assigned

3. Review Profile Permissions

  1. Scroll to the General User Permissions section.
  2. Look for Download AppExchange Packages.
    • ✅ If checked, the user has the permission.
    • ❌ If unchecked or grayed out, proceed to the troubleshooting section of this article.

Standard profiles like System Administrator may show this permission as read-only. You cannot directly edit them.

Troubleshooting

Permission is Grayed Out in Profile
  • Cause: You're viewing a standard profile (not editable).
  • Solution: Clone the profile and enable the permission in the custom version.

User License Doesn’t Support the Permission
  • Go to the user's detail page and check the User License field.
  • Only the following licenses support the permission:
    • Salesforce
    • Salesforce Platform
    • Force.com - App Subscription
  • ❗ Not supported for: Chatter Free, Chatter Only, Community, etc.

Contact your Salesforce administrator or Salesforce Support if you’re unable to grant the permission due to license restrictions or org-level limitations.
